I make small scale, finely woven tapestries.
I have always been hugely inspired by the relationship of one colour to another - it gives me a huge buzz - an almost physical reaction. I have gone from using stylised shapes to almost complete abstraction in recent work - circles, stripes, blocks of colour. The symbolism of the circle resonates with me, repeating this shape over and over builds up a richness of surface; stripes have become my 'timelines'; the colours are literally my building blocks.
Living in Salabert I have an acute sense of the seasons, the weather, nature and the passage of time. We are surrounded by tracks and lanes where we can walk and observe the year as it unfolds. From my kitchen window I can see our weather coming to us from the Lot.
I feel a strong sense of continuity in this place, knowing I am walking in the footsteps of those who lived in this small area - in my house even. They walked the same paths to take the stock to pasture, to go to church, to school, they heard the same church bell, they too watched the weather approaching from the Lot.
My circles, rings, and stripes mark this sense of connection. Repeated shapes, always subtley different which mark, physically and symbolically the passage of time.
